Scuba Diving in Key Largo

Known as the Diving Capital of the World, Key Largo is one of the premier scuba diving destinations in the United States. With crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, abundant marine life, and world-famous wrecks, it’s easy to see why divers travel from around the globe to experience the underwater wonders of the Florida Keys.

Whether you’re a first-time diver or a seasoned enthusiast, here’s everything you need to know before diving into Key Largo’s incredible underwater world.

Why Dive in Key Largo?

Key Largo sits adjacent to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, home to North America’s only living coral barrier reef. The area’s warm waters, excellent visibility, and diverse dive sites make it ideal for divers of all skill levels.

Throughout the year, divers can encounter tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, nurse sharks, eels, and colorful coral formations. Water temperatures typically range from the low 70s in winter to the mid-80s in summer, allowing for comfortable diving nearly year-round.

Must-Visit Dive Sites

Christ of the Abyss

Located within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Christ of the Abyss is one of Key Largo’s most famous underwater attractions. The bronze statue sits approximately 25 feet below the surface and has become a bucket-list dive for visitors from around the world.

The shallow depth makes it accessible for newer divers while still offering plenty of marine life and coral formations to explore.

Molasses Reef

Often considered one of the best reef dives in the Florida Keys, Molasses Reef features vibrant coral gardens, large schools of tropical fish, sea turtles, and excellent visibility. Multiple mooring sites throughout the reef offer divers a variety of underwater landscapes. This site is suitable for both beginner and experienced divers.

French Reef

French Reef offers a mix of shallow reefs and deeper coral formations, making it a favorite among photographers and marine life enthusiasts. Divers frequently spot angelfish, parrotfish, barracuda, and an array of colorful reef species.

Spiegel Grove

For experienced divers, the Spiegel Grove is one of the most iconic wreck dives in North America. This former U.S. Navy ship was intentionally sunk off Key Largo in 2002 and now serves as an artificial reef stretching more than 500 feet in length.

The wreck attracts a wide variety of marine life and provides multiple dive opportunities for advanced and technical divers.

Benwood Wreck

The Benwood is a World War II-era shipwreck located in relatively shallow water, making it an excellent introduction to wreck diving. Over the years, coral growth and marine life have transformed the wreck into a thriving underwater habitat.
